Capella University did very little for me, professionally. I chose the field of psychology, with a goal of reaching forensic psychiatry as my field of work (I am currently a forensic psychiatrist), however, I feel that this university was a long, drawn-out waste of time, to put my feelings in extremely simple terms. Had I attended a university more directly focused, I would have eliminated 2 years of chasing a boring, short-lived career as a student counselor (which I chose simply because I had not yet achieved the credits and knowledge needed to be in the field of forensic sciences.

Capella University was also (in my opinion) a poor choice even for someone with a desire for a career as any type of counselor, psychologist, therapist, etc., simply because the classes were too heavily focused on "time spent logged into the classroom," "time spent interacting with fellow students" and very little focus on direct learning. I knew less about my field of study through the university than I did through my own personal field work. This is unfortunate, considering I paid money for this education in my field of interest.

Most of the information I received through this university was what I consider to be "general knowledge" directed toward a "generic" bachelor's degree. Most universities are able to give students at least a small amount of knowledge in their fields of interest within the last several quarters/semesters of study. This univeristy did not give me any true direction. Upon graduation from Capella, I was just as prepared to be an elementary school teacher, archaeologist, or business administrator as I was a counselor. In other words, I learned little direct knowledge of my field. The university focused heavily on general courses, and the direct courses were scattered and did not prepare me to be a counselor or psychologist (I felt the professors were more interested in group study sessions based on solving unrealistic problems that were just plain goofy).

For me, this university was a lot of mindless chatter. I should have just walked into the Ohio State University or another physical university and got my hands-on, true-life training from the start. This university may very well be appropriate for those in other fields of study, but if the other fields offered in the same manner, I can't see a positive light.
