Major: Economics (This Major's Salary over time)
I was an economics and mathematics joint major who graduated May 2011. Overall, factoring in academics, college life, social scene, opportunities and experiences I think that USC offers one of the best college experiences around. Obviously there are positives and negatives to think about. Academically, USC has a lot of highly ranked programs but I honestly don't think that it compares to other california schools in the caliber of research like stanford, ucla, berkeley and even ucsd. But if you're an undergrad I really don't think it matters, you get out of your education what you put in which is true for any college you go to. If you need to register for a class chances are you'll get in which is useful for graduating on time. The econ and math departments are somewhat laggards compared to other departments, for one it doesn't have a sense of community or funding like marshall business school or film school. Also the networking activity in the econ and math department is weak. Networking is very important in life I think that will take you farther than having good grades. One of the great strengths about SC is the diversity of people that go to the school. Meaning people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, countries/states (USC has the largest international student population of any university), interests, personalities, majors and also abilities and levels of motivations. Before I came USC had the reputation of having very WASPy elitists from Newport Beach, while there definitely are those kind of people you will have no problem finding people on campus that you can build a genuine friendships with. The Greek system is big here most of the crazy parties which tend to be exclusive unless you're a hot girl are usually centered around there which does kind of suck if you are not really in to that. There are parties that aren't centered on "the row" but they tend not to be on the scale of frat parties. But don't let that get you down you have all of LA to explore and trust me there is a lot of cool stuff to do around the city that doesn't involve puking your brains out every thursday night.I know everyone worries about safety but honestly I've never felt threatened living around the campus, I have definately adopted the area as my home and I love it.
