If your planning on attending Elon, you should know what it really is and what its like. I read the website, went on the tours, and heard president Lambert speak. The university sounded very nice, and Elon can say all the nice things about itself it wants to, but that doesn't make them true. Heres the facts about Elon, academically its slightly above average, nothing special really. A school like UNC chapel hill is several levels above Elon, and it costs 10 times less too. So if academics are your main priority, you shouldn't come here. As far as social groups/clicks, there really is only one, rich white preps. If your not a rich white prep there's a good chance you wont fit in here, and heaven forbid your not even white, then you can spend your 4 years hanging out with the 7 other minority students that go here. I remember a few months ago i saw an Asian walking down the sidewalk and i took a double take. If you are white and just not a prep, you'll find that the kids here have little to no tolerance for social diversity. People will either shit on you for not dressing in a way they deem acceptable(wheres your polo and bow tie? DO NOT tell me your wearing sweats to class) or will just avoid you. In this sense you really don't have much freedom, sure you can dress however you want, but then people wont associate with you, so you may as well throw on your unofficial school uniform (polo and khakis at least)to make your life a little easier. Also as far as social events, Elon has alot of clubs and events and likes to brag about them, however virtually all of their clubs, learning communities(which i have been apart of), and social events are basically inactive, events for clubs and LCs aren't held often and very few people if anyone shows up. My LC had 3 meetings in a year and talked about doing a few things, but never actually did anything, and LC activities are "mandatory" unlike the clubs and social events. All there is to do is drink, heavily. When it comes down to it this school is for rich white kids form New Jersey, New York, Mass, and Maryland who want to go to a school far away (to escape the watchful eyes or their parents?) with easy classes and grade inflation problems so that they can drink themselves into unconsciousness 5 days a week and still graduate with a good GPA. But in the end most employers don't really respect the university because of its reputation(and who would want to hire the stupid, close minded, entitled, stuck up, irresponsible, and immature students that Elon produces). so ya, if your a rich white prep from the north who wants to run away to the south to indulge in your alcoholism in a country-club like environment with other country-club type people, then yes, Elon is the place for you, and i absolutely mean that no sarcasm intended. Especially given the fact that your from a rich family, you wont need the Job that you wont be able to get with your degree after you graduate. Let the good times roll am i right. If this isn't you, you should probably go somewhere else. I definitely wish i had, i did a pre-collegiate program at William and Mary and it was amazing. The professors were knowledgeable and interesting, ones here are boring like high school teachers, the kids were very liberal and open minded and well aware of global issues, as well as mature and intelligent, and obviously its a very good school and is highly respected. It just sucks knowing i could have had an actual college experience with people like that, and due to my own ignorance and Elons misleading, yet effective marketing strategies, ive had to spend my days at shitty frat parties drinking piss-water with a bunch of close minded, ignorant preps in middle of no were north Carolina with people throwing up on my shoes and girls so drunk they don't know were they are sexually assaulting me on the dance floor.
