The University of Phoenix is a good school if you apply yourself. There are students there who don't care about the quality or value of their education and are only hoping to receive that "piece of paper". That's exactly what they'll get from this school and it won't be worth the ink that's printed on it.

However, there are students who do apply themselves and who are there to challenge their intellect and to learn. The school will benefit them as well.

I've found the school to be challenging because I wanted my degree to mean something. The assignments are heavy. There is extensive reading required. Many of my courses had extensive papers that had to be done and they were graded to a high standard. Most of my facilitators expected quality work and graded in a manner that assured they received quality work from the students.

Having received my first degree from a traditional 4-year college (University of Nebraska at Omaha), I found the UoP to be more difficult than attending a traditional school. The easiest thing about UoP was finding parking in my garage. Everything else was a challenge.

As a small business owner, the courses related to me and how I ran my business. I was immediately able to implement things that I learned in a real-world environment. Many times, I had to finish reading an assignment at work, or during my travels in order to have my assignments completed on time. While the required posting of two posts over four days may seem easy, having substantial posts can be challenging. Especially when running a small business, raising children, taking care of external family requirements and getting an education are combined.

The Learning Team is the most horrific part of the UoP experience. Due to the location of many students, different time zones, different educational levels and different study habits, the Learning Teams are a disaster. I would encourage the University to find a different way to achieve Team results.

It's very easy for an uncaring person to drag your grade down because they did shoddy work. This makes it uncomfortable, and also frustrating for team members who have to go behind and clean up someone else's work.

I got along great with my Academic Advisor. She was great and we talked all the time about many things other than school.

My finance counselor was another story. I never heard from her unless she was trying to get money. I think the UoP can do a better job in training their Finance Counselors and making the finance experience a much smoother one. Student loans are easy to get online and the process was smooth but the wait times seemed a bit long to me.

So all in all, I think that the school is set up to be a good school for students that are capable. There are some very stupid students at this school. I'm not trying to be mean, crass or rude, but there are some students there that simply don't belong in any college. Some of the spelling you find aren't just mere typo's. There are people who simply can't spell, who don't know how to use punctuation, who have no concept of writing a college level paper or how to conduct research. For that, the school may be branded as a degree mill but I also wonder what the average GPA of the students who barely graduate are. I know for certain, I had some doozies in a few of my classes.

If you want a challenging college where you can apply yourself can work independently, this school isn't a bad choice. You must be able to rely on yourself and really have a thirst for knowledge. If you want to slide by, I'm sure you can probably find a way to do that because there are some ignorant people here. But if you want to do well, you can apply yourself and do well. This school is what you make of it.

commentThis is a very well written, and frank review of the UoP in my estimation. I have taken 4 courses from the UoP, and I have to concur with almost everything that has been written in the review. The learning team that the UoP utilizes is a joke in my opinion. To add insult to injury 30% of your grade is based upon the learning team, and like the reviewer stated, there are some folks I have had the displeasure to 'work with' on the teams that DEFINITELY did not belong in college. Their work would hardly be good enough for high school let alone college. I have since moved on to AMU and am waiting for my May 5th class to open up, hopefully I'll have a much better experience over there.
