Throughout my freshmen year at a southern state school, I was desperate to transfer to a more challenging institution and Elon University appeared to be the perfect fit.

It seemed that I had dotted all my I's and crossed all my T's. I toured the school numerous times, I searched the internet and even this site for advice. Sure, there was the occasional negative comment that stated the student body was "closed minded" and "overly preppy", but the amount of negative comments seemed blatantly overwhelmed by the positive. I. Should. Have. Listened.

I consider myself to be an open-minded individual. Greek life? No problem, although I myself am not necessarily interested, whatever floats your boat. Politics? I have my own opinion, but everyone has their own right to believe in what they choose. Drinking? No issues here. I'm a full advocate of drinking a reasonable amount, even becoming a bit intoxicated. When I came to Elon, I realized that being an open-minded individual is not only a rarity, it forces one into becoming a social recluse. Upon stating that I had no interest in joining a sorority around half of the girls who had welcomed me with open arms dissapeared into the woodwork. Upon joining a political organization on campus, I realized our numbers compared 20:300 to the other more popular political option. Also the faculty provided a blatant bias in attention and aid. Upon attending my first parties, I found that responsible drinking is nonexistent. Vomit, date rape, cocaine use, and negligent behavior is the norm at any greek affiliated function. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Although the faculty is fantastic and the curriculum is challenging, I transferred BACK to my state school after only one year of classes. In a nutshell, its a shame that the overly white, wealthy, spoiled, and entitled student body has tainted this otherwise fantastic school. Also, in my time at Elon, it became apparent to me that the school has a monumental drinking and cocaine problem. So, please take caution when considering whether or not to attend Elon.

commentYour post is very upsetting to me. Like you, I am a journalism major. Unlike you, I love Elon. I am also in a Greek organization, and while some of what you say applies to some people on campus, it's definitely not a generalization that applies to all. I don't think Elon is any different than most schools when it comes to having a certain population of people who behave immaturely, or who are in a political minority, or anything else that you take personally and don't like.

From what you've said it's clear that you take pride in daring to be different. I think it is odd that you are shocked that your social options are limited. Hold up a mirror and ask yourself why you are so angry. What is so bad in your life that you have to focus your unhappiness on others? Open your eyes, life is not perfect, and everyone has their challenges to overcome. I can attest to the fact that there are all kinds of people at Elon, and a majority of them are respectable, decent and nice. End. Of. Story.

responseAfter looking over my post as well as scanning the responses, I feel as though I need to elaborate. Although, I agree, all other universities face the same problems and stereotypes that I divulged regarding Elon, I think the thing that stood out the most was the overwhelming feeling that all of Elon's struggles are swept under the rug. Yes, all sororities and fraternities experience problems with drinking and drugs, but in many cases the University acknowledges the problem and publicizes it to the student body prior to major incidents such as what occurred at the Lighthouse. Elon, while a great fit for many, is not a perfect institution and therefor it has an obligation to provide its potential students with an honest overview of its day-to-day campus life.

Yes, I am angry, but I feel as though it is justified. I feel as though the school was misrepresented and that I was mislead. But, again, that is my opinion.

commentAlso, I consider myself to be a generally happy person, and, in regards to focusing my unhappiness on others, I'm sorry if you feel that way. Maybe my experience was rare, but it did occur and I do feel the need to discuss it with those who are considering the University.
commentPoor judgement and irresponsible behavior by college students is a serious NATIONAL problem and hardly one isolated to Elon. See "HAZE the Movie" or the trailer at … and wake up. Then search alcohol or drugs or hazing on the Elon University website and you will find NUMEROUS examples of how school administrators and concerned individuals at Elon are attempting to take actions to address issues such as those you have described. I am sorry you were unhappy at Elon, but your reasoning is flawed and your attempts to smear Elon are pitiful.
responseYes, poor judgment and irresponsible behavior is a serious national problem at the college level and I have no doubt that one will find several records of similar incidents that have occurred at campuses across the country. I am in no way disputing this. I did take the time to search the Elon website and yes, I found the articles you are referring to. It is extremely fortunate that Elon administrators, faculty, and students are making an effort to change reckless behavior on campus, but, again that does not change the fact that I was overwhelmed by the behavior that I witnessed while attending the university. And, as I mentioned before, I go to a massive state school, one of the largest in the country, and I still have not observed the irresponsible behaviors that I witnessed at Elon as frequently. Now, much of this is probably due to the fact that Elon's campus is isolated and thus behaviors are more noticeable, but that still does not entirely explain why the problem is so prevalent. Once again, I am sorry if I have offended you, but look at the above responses to my original post, is that how you want the university to be perceived? Do you want the students and parents who will inevitably visit this website for advice to observe the above responses made by Elon students?
responsePeople, grow up. You are turning this post into a biitch board. Get over yourself and move on.
responseI agree with you. After transferring here, I'm going back to MY old school as well. I can honestly say that I have never seen drinking problems to this extent. I attended a college as my last year of high school where I thought drugs and drinking were some of the worst, and as far as drinking goes, I was wrong. 5 nights seems to be the party/drinking average.

I also had a similar experience with sororities but from an opposite standpoint: some of my casual friends are in sororities and it never seemed to be an issue that I wasn't. However, when I announced to my nonsorority friends that I was going through rush, it definitely cost me a lot of "friends." It's either that people are overwhelmingly supportive of greek life, or very very against it. Being close minded seems to be a very attribute of elon students. Even the professors will admit to me, behind closed doors, that they totally get why I'm leaving. They have their own similar complaints.
I get very frustrated because I feel like people who are going out partying every night don't deserve to be in this type of university.
I'm going back to my old private school. While they are not quite as well-known, it IS almost the same… Elon's name is not worth the unhappiness you get if you don't find "your people" and it's not worth the lack of scholarships that result from little to no endowment.

comment"This was the wholesale baseball jersers most special game today for us," Matheny said. "It took a little bit of everything. It took the entire roster."
Gant wasnt even on the roster until a few hours prior to first pitch, oakland athletics jersers swung up from Memphis as insurance to cover innings John Brebbia could not, after Brebbias three-inning save Wednesday. Gant entered after Martinez tied cincinnati reds jersers the game with a two-out double in the 10th, then breezed through a full turn of the Mets lineup unscathed.
