UT is not, nor does it presume to be, a top tier school. By far, The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan are "better" schools in the region served by UT. However, UT fills a necessary void. It provides a good education for people without the resources to attend a U of M or OSU. It is a solid regional University with some outstanding programs, such as Engineering, Pharmacy, Education, and Business. That is not to say there isn't room for improvement. I have friends who breezed through certain freshman level courses, only to find they faced truly challenging coursework as juniors and seniors. While that lack of consistency is lamentable, it is not endemic. Graduates will get as much out of a UT education and degree as they put into it. My fraternity brother who spent as much time sitting next to the keg as he did in class barely eeked out a degree, and is complaining about being stuck in a lower-level job six years after graduation. One of my other friends took his business degree, got some great work experience, and started his own business. He now makes six figures. The campus is one of the nicest in the midwest. It is also one of the safest. There have been staff changes at the police department and violent crimes are way down. The main campus is on the west side of Toledo near Old Orchard and Ottawa Hills, two great neighborhoods. East of main campus is the Bancroft Hills neighborhood, a mix of permanent residents and student rentals. South of main campus has been flourishing … slowly … a number of new businesses and retail complexes have been or are being built. The Scott Park campus has become much more of an 8 to 5 facility with more administrative offices being located there.
