Date: Feb 09 2003
Major: Language - French/Spanish/etc. (This Major's Salary over time)
Pros: the teachers seem enthusiastic and are relatively interesting, the workload is high but fair, the spanish dept has been helpful to me, the campus is very nice, the housing is solid, and alcohol is abundant to say the least.
  • Cons: the administration is disgracefully unhelpful, completely unconcerned with the individual student-they run vandy like a cash cow and are unsympathetic to the point of rudeness. a majority of the student population are rich deluded children who never detached themselves mentally from the high school clique system (thus the massive greek presence). the dating scene is absurd in that it does not exist, rather you just get drunk and hope to sloppily hook up and somehow face each other the next morning. the greek system is so dominant that its almost funny, like some bizarre society of hierarchies based on all the most ridiculous standards like alcohol tolerance and favorite college bball teams (duke anyone?). People will brush this accusation off and try to get you to believe that the frats provide a fun way to make friends and do a lot of good charitable work. At the same time, you have to pay a prohibitive (for those with a reasonable income) due each year and the friends you make are those most likely to gangbang your unconscious girlfriend. Pledges are encouraged to pick fights, steal alcohol, drive drunk (this happens ALL the time at vandy), etc. It's not like you get horse whipped or anything, but pledges are no less worked to death and degraded. The sorority system is the most superficial organization ive seen since, well, vandy's administration. one in particular has exactly one (1) black girl per class, thank god they haven't upped the quota, huh? on a side note, the diversity is alright but the majority of african americans keep to themselves and have a totally secluded social circle. back to the sorority system, you can almost instantly tell which house a girl is in by talking to her for 5 seconds (or often just looking at her). You've got your a-class (hot) house and then the rest (not hot). That's all there is to it. If you absolutely cannot make friends without buying them, if you feel that it will be hard to find alcohol and parties at COLLEGE, then by all means, go greek. oh, and formals suck beyond compare. You may think you can just avoid the greek system like say, an extracurricular activity that you dont want to join, but it is pervasive in every aspect of vandy. you will see greek in everything, not just a friday night on frat row. oh, and you're expected to party thursday night as well so make some extra room in your liver for a third night of binge drinking. Seriously, do not come here if you are socially awkward or are susceptible to feeling like a pariah. i have seen so many kids just lock themselves away in their singles for the next 3 years after going through a horrible freshman year. sure, it would be good to try to come out of your shell but this is NOT the place to do it.
  • I cannot stress enough, DO NOT come to vanderbilt until you hear about a significant change (residential colleges, no more greek system, etc). it's definitely improving but its still a few years away from being a good place to live.

I don't enjoy ripping my university apart and turning away prospective students but everything I've said is the truth. I have friends of all types here, and I'd probably piss all of them off with this, but it's a necessary warning. say no to vandy.
