| Super Brilliant | UC Riverside is a very racist school. They do not treat people of color with respect. Do not be fooled by the "most diverse" UC. The police are really racist and want to lock up or shoot up any student of color. The police are corrupt. They lie and make up reasons to wrongfully accuse students. Sgt. Day is racist. Officer Garcia hates his own people and people of color. DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL!!!!!! Do yourself a huge favor and accept another campus, this place is trash. The chancellors are just as racist. There really is a lot of bias opinion here. Everyone jaded by their delusions of grandeur about where they really should have gone. Bitter that UCLA didn't kiss their entitled asses, begging for their attendance. Get over it, really.
I came here from out of state. When you tell people from out of state about UCR, there is no negative stigma. No one cares. They recognize the UC school, and appreciate it for that. Really, it's true. I attended UCR with an open mind and eagerness. However, I was let down, as well as surprised. I transferred after a year and a half, so I have something to compared it to.
The dorms left something to be desired. West Lo in particular is incredibly grungy and the cafeteria is poor. The dorms are more expensive at UCR than my current university, but in worse condition and offer many less amenities. Room and board should be much less.
The people you meet here range greatly. Some are stuck up and "offended" they "had" to attend UCR. Many others come from modest backgrounds and are quite friendly. However, at times I felt that there were racial tensions since there is so much diversity. Overall, I honestly didn't meet too many brilliant people. I did meet some, but out of all the people in my dorm hall for instance, there were more bimbos than smart people. Although, California high schools are generally terrible so many people arrive here with only a basic grasp on things like essay writing. I had people tell me this personally. Is it their fault for their ignorance? You tell me. Then there is a certain attitude about Southern California life, that whole laid back "don't give a fuck" attitude. The constantly busy, talking, moving around thing. A lot of people at UCR are like this. No time to think, have to be clubbing or yapping.
As for academics, I was an honors student, and really enjoyed the honors program. Deanna, who unfortunately no longer runs the program, really made an effort to learn everyone's name. I felt like a person, and not a number. I met some good people from the program and enjoyed small classes with the professors.
Classes were generally easy for me. I was able to transfer with a 3.82 GPA. BUT I always attended class, always did the work, and always gave my best. If you come in with an attitude that classes will be easy, YOU WILL FAIL. I attended a VERY challenging high school and took college level courses. I was prepared 100% for college. Many students choose sleeping over class, clubbing over studying, and underestimate the rigor of classes. Even brilliant students, those smarter than me, still struggled with some of their classes. So don't snub your nose at UCR academics. I was learning things like advanced political science game theory in an introduction class. But there are your "stupid" classes. Sociology 101 and an ethnic studies class I took come to mind.
The actual city of Riverside is rather dull and well, kind of ugly. It has everything you would need chain store wise. A billion targets, malls, fast foods, and so on. It's all pretty boring stuff though. Seen it, done it sort of things. However, I'm sure there are great adventures to be had in Riverside, but I never could get people to just go on a drive with me (I had a car) or just go out for dinner very often. People were always groaning about not having a party or club to go to. I never did understand why people weren't more open to just going out to chill without all the frills.
Overall, UCR just wasn't me. I couldn't get into that "California way of life". I hated the LA area in general (visited LA many times), not just Riverside. I hated the whole urban wasteland of it all. Plus, tuition was incredible for out of state students. The tuition hikes are awful, and the UC system really is becoming a huge rip off. I felt like I was being charged for the stupidest things all the time.
Overall, if you are an in state student, especially for those living near Riverside, you may really love UCR. Give it a chance, I had some critical things to say, but there were a lot of good times. For those out of state, DO NOT attend UCR or any UC school. It's not worth your money. Don't hold up California's bankrupt budget with your 50K tuition!

| Quite Bright | Riverside is a medium (mediocre) university with limited programs for graduate students. The professors in graduate school are not as good as I thought they would be, when compared to other graduate school professors in California. UCR does not give much scholarships for graduate student, but you may find part time jobs on Campus on a limited basis because there are lots of students. But one thing is good: it is a small Campus and med size town, and you have lots of time on your hands to study as a grad student. Also, if you're willing to face the heavy traffic, you can get to the beach for the day and come back home in the eve. Too bad they closed the Bull-N-Mouth night bar because that was a relief for us students so close to Campus on week ends. I had lots of fun on SAT nights at this club.
